Railway staff are always extremely helpful. When the train came into Blackall from Jericho, a rep was told to get a taxi to Tattersalls Hotel, as the town was some distance from the station. While he waited for a taxi he asked a porter:
"Why didn't they build the station nearer the town?"
The porter looked at him pityingly.
"I suppose they wanted it to be close to the train line."
The following night in Barcaldine the same rep was waiting for the Midnight Horror to get to Longreach. It was supposed to leave at 10.30. It was now 11.15 and there was no sign of it. He asked the stationmaster:
"How long will the train be?"
There was a quick calculation.
